Dojo Etiquette
1) Students should bow upon
entering and leaving the Dojo.
2)Respect your training tools. Your dogi should be clean and mended.
Tools should be in good condition and in their proper place when not
in use. Do not handle the training tools of others unless given
express permission by the owner.
3)The class is opened and closed with a formal ceremony. It is
important to be on time and participate in this ceremony. If you are
unavoidably late you should always wait until ceremony is completed
before entering the dojo.
4)Students should greet each other with Onigaishimasu when beginning
training and Domo Arigato Gozaimashita when completing practice or
changing partners.
5)Students with questions are directed to ask the instructor. If a
beginning student and intermediate/advanced student are working
together, the senior of the two may not give unsolicited direction
until the junior student has tried the technique a few times.
Advanced students are directed to attempt silent resolution of the
problem before requesting assistance.
6)Do only the techniques shown. No alternatives unless instructed to
do so.
7)The proper way to sit on the mat is seiza or fudoza for kyu levels
and above, and indian style for all others.
8)If for some reason it is necessary to ask a question of the
instructor raise your hand, or go to him, never call him over, bow
respectfully and wait for his acknowledgement.
9)Never forget that you are part of a long tradition and there is a
reason for everything you are shown.
